Learning Outcome:

Create a grid, apply knowledge of the left vs. right brain functions, exhibit contour line drawing skills and employ a grid to construct a proportionate drawing.

RSP Session Two: The Grid Drawing Method

Essential Questions:

What is the grid drawing method, and how do you prepare for one?

How can you apply your knowledge of left vs. right brain thinking when drawing your self-portrait?

Description:

Students will begin by learning how to set up their grids, and then they will apply their previous knowledge of the functions of the brain and contour line drawing when sketching their self-portrait using the grid drawing method.

Setting Up Your Grids

Watch the video below to set up your grid. Before viewing, make sure you have gathered your materials: 15"x22" drawing paper, 7"x10" black and white self portrait photograph, a long ruler, pencil, eraser and sharpener.

Now that you have your grids set up, you are ready to begin drawing! As you view the next video, pay attention to any connections you can make to your previous knowledge about the right vs. left brain. How can you apply what you know about left vs. right brain thinking to help you draw using a grid?

The grid drawing will be just contour line drawing for now, since we have not learned to shade yet. You should recall from our first unit that contour lines define the edges and surface ridges of an object. Think of it like you are "outlining" the features of your portrait.
